Things to do at Nuwara Eliya

Victoria Park (1.2Km)

Established in 1987 and named after Queen Victoria’s on her 60th jubilee coronation the is 27 acres in the city center. Beautifully laid out gardens this park is maintained by the local municipality for the enjoyment of the public. The best time to visit the park is in march to May and again in the months of august and September.

Gregory Lake (1.4Km)

Gregory Lake was created in 1873 by the British era Governor at the time, Sir William Gregory, supposedly for the purpose of providing electricity. However, the lake was mainly used for leisure and recreation after it was built. At its peak of fame, Gregory Lake was the most prominent attraction in the area and was used as a place to relax by many visitors.

Galway Forest (2.5km)

This national park of 27 ha with a short 2km walking track is largely made up of a dense montane forest. Apart from the flora and fauna the park has very old trees of both local and foreign origin. The field ornithology group of Sri Lanka rate the forest as a significant site and which site is said to have over 20 migrant and 30 native birds.

Pedro Tea Estate

Pedro tea estate is located about 4.5 kms east of the property. The tea factory is open to visitors from 8 am to 5 am. Here you are taken on a guided tour of the factory and the process how tea is manufactured, graded and packed for export is explained. After this tour you sit by the tea fields and enjoy a hot cuppa. The tea shop within the factory premises makes for a great buy of factory fresh and various grades to choose from.

Waterfalls

Lovers leap waterfall (4 Km), Glen Falls (1.3 Km) & Bomburu Ella Falls (17.8Km). These beautiful falls are situated close to the town of Nuwara Eliya. It’s surrounded in greenery and tea plantations. The walk is quite pleasant past tea plantations and countryside.

Hakgala Botanical Garden (8.3Km)

Fresh air surrounded by botanical gardens and vistas makes for the ideal relaxing stroll. 10,000 species or more are planted here, the large collection of various roses and orchids are the most notable. Pick up a guide leaflet from the park office which will help you navigate through the many windy walkways.

Moon Plains (4.5 Km)

This area is classified as an agricultural and environmental tourism zone in the year 2014. The plains are a 400 meter long and 40 mtr wide area being its core area and is home to sambur, deer and from time to time leopards too. The main attraction of the plains aptly referred to as moon plains is the mini worlds end offering you a 360 degree view Just past the government potato seed farm and not far from Nuwara Eliya this area makes for a great drive through on your way to Horton plains. The plains are open from 8am to 5pm..

Horton Plains National Park

Located 27.6 kms from Nuwara Eliya, UNESCO designated Sri Lanka’s central highlands a World Heritage Site for their outstanding beauty. Experience some of their most dramatic landscapes on this door-to-door private guided tour of Horton Plains National Park and the vertiginous World’s End cliffs. There are many species found here that are endemic and as such it is considered a bio diversity hotspot. Look out for birds, lizards, bear monkey, and sambar deer as you hike 6 miles (9.5 kilometers) to World’s End, Baker’s Falls, and back to base. some which can only be seen here.
